Our History
After settling in Syracuse as a Deaf refugee in 2011 and experiencing isolation, lack of access, and frustration, Monu Chhetri knew what she had to do. She experienced the challenges, barriers, and difficulties of this population first-hand and went to work as a volunteer. With determination and a shared vision, Monu set out to create an organization to address this pressing need and create positive change. Together with Tamla Htoo, a Deaf New American, they brought deaf refugees together in Monu’s Northside apartment living room. Deaf refugees came from oppressive regimes and war-torn territories, always against their will. They were forced from their homes. In that safe space, they learned about surviving in Syracuse, NY, and began their journey as the Deaf New American community. In July 2022, the Deaf New American Advocacy, Inc. was officially established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
